Mentee: Suzanne LoSasso
College Counselor
St. Scholastica Academy

Why did you join the IACAC Mentorship Program?
I joined the IACAC Mentorship Program because I was brand new to the field and I was really left to my own devices at my new job.  I actually went my first year without a mentor and realized in year two how helpful a mentor would be.  I was lucky enough to be assigned an incredible mentor that I have found invaluable.

How have you connected since you were matched?
We have primarily communicated via email due to our very busy schedules balancing work and family we have gotten together for lunch and usually try to find time to meet one-on-one before or around association meetings or conferences.

What have you learned from Beth?
I have learned a lot from my mentor – I have called upon her expertise throughout the year, needing consultation on everything from the mundane to a complicated testing situation regarding the ACT.  It brings me great comfort knowing I have my mentor’s knowledge backing my decisions.

What advice would you give other members?
I would highly recommend the program to new College Counselors.  It is reassuring to know there is someone to call on whenever a question or concern arises and they also are a direct pipeline to the wonderful community that is College Counseling.

How has your membership in IACAC enhanced your professional development?
I keep myself updated and knowledgeable with every email that comes from IACAC and I feel connected to my peers and informed through the annual IACAC Conference.

Mentor: Beth Gilfillan
College Counselor
Deerfield High School

Why did you join the IACAC Mentorship Program?
I have had such great mentors and learned so much from them (and still do!), so I wanted to be able to do the same for someone else.  I also just enjoy meeting other college counseling professionals and feel like I learn something from everyone!

How have you connected since you were matched?
Suzanne and I email a lot, we’ve met for lunch, and we try to meet at professional development activities too (NACAC, CACCA, etc.).  I always like getting an email from Suzanne!

What have you learned from Suzanne?
Suzanne worked at a small private school, and is now going to work at a Montessori school.  I’ve learned about these different school systems and how college counseling can differ in so many ways at each school!

What advice would you give other members?
Try to connect as much as possible with your mentee/mentor – even if it’s just an email once a month.  This is such a busy profession that often we forget to check in with each other!  It can be nice to just say hi, invite the other person to a professional event you’re going to, or bounce ideas off one another.

How has your membership in IACAC enhanced your professional development?
I’ve been connected to an excellent network of people that I consider my colleagues, mentors, and friends!  Whether it’s a formal meeting or informal chat, I always learn something new and feel supported, especially when I need it most!
