Why did you join the IACAC Mentorship Program?

When I first entered the counseling profession, I had some great mentors who were there to answer my questions, offer advice, and help me succeed as a counselor. To this day, I still rely on them to help me get through the “tough” days. Hopefully, I can be a resource for somebody new to this profession and help them in their professional journey as a counselor and help them to be successful.

In what ways have you connected since you were matched (email, met for dinner/drinks, phone conversations)?

Right now, most of our conversation has been through e-mail and a few phone conversations. We were unsuccessful in coordinating our schedules to meet in person.

What have you learned from your mentee?

I learned that this profession will be in capable hands in the future. The energy, passions, and questions she brings will only help in her professional career. My mentee is willing to ask the tough questions to help her understand what it takes to be a successful counselor.

What advice would you give other mentors or mentees looking to join the Mentorship program or who are currently mentors or mentees?

This is a great way to be involved in IACAC. We all have something to offer and can learn from one another. I would encourage everyone to participate and become a mentor or mentee. This is a great way to learn form one another and be connected to a wonderful organization.

Other than the Mentorship Program, how has your membership in IACAC enhanced your professional development?

I am truly blessed to be working in this profession. By belonging to IACAC, I have the opportunity to attend district seminars, summer institute, and the annual conference. Each of these opportunities give me the opportunity to learn and pass the information along to the students I work with.

Why did you join the IACAC Mentorship Program?

I joined the IACAC Mentorship Program while doing my counseling internship. I was excited to be part of the Mentorship program because I figured out quickly in other jobs that you learn more from experienced professionals than the classroom. For this reason I was very pleased to hear a positive “yes,” when I requested to be part of the program. As a new school counselor I am excited to be linked up with a professional that I have not yet met. It’s meant a lot that he has been willing to be there to answer all of my questions and make the time for professional discussions.

In what ways have you connected since you were matched (email, met for dinner/drinks, phone conversations)?

My mentor and I have connected via email and telephone and are hoping to meet face-to-face soon. I feel that we have made a positive connection that has worked well for us.

What have you learned from your mentor?

I have learned a great deal about the variety issues counselors will face d. My mentor has used his background and experiences to help me gain insight into the various ways counselors are utilized and how each individual school handles various situations. The college piece is an area that was not stressed enough in my master’s program and I have gained significant knowledge in this area. From the college application process, to helping students find the right fit, as well as creating programs for students and parents with financial aid process. My mentor has also offered to review my professional resume as well as provide me career advice for continuing my professional development and growth.

What advice would you give other mentors or mentees looking to join the Mentorship program or who are currently mentors or mentees?

As a mentee, I think it’s important to appreciate the time being given to you by your mentor. I hope my mentor/mentee relationship will continue for a long time so that I will provide support and a different perspective as I grow professionally. It’s a wonderful program!

Other than the Mentorship Program, how has your membership in IACAC enhanced your professional development?

My membership in IACAC has greatly enhanced my professional development. The knowledge I gained as student member by attending various District Seminars, as well as the Annual Conference before my allowed me to gain invaluable knowledge. The newsletters and listserv have kept me informed of trends in college admissions and the impact of government on our students. In addition, I was welcomed to join committees and in the process have met some incredibly talented individuals.
