President’s Update: Privileged

Laura DochertyPrivileged.

This word so accurately describes how I feel to be the president of IACAC. It has been an amazing five months and I am looking forward to what the rest of my term will bring. Starting with our inaugural and extremely successful Middle Management Institute, then on to our record attendance at both the Summer Institute and at NACAC in New Orleans, it has been an honor to serve our organization.

DREAM Act SigningWith great pride and gratitude for the work of our Human Relations Committee, committee chair Aliza Gilbert and I attended the signing of the Illinois Dream Act with NACAC president, Jim Miller in August. I had tears in my eyes throughout the entire experience and was proud of the work that IACAC members did to ensure that this bill was signed into law by Governor Quinn. On my office shelf sits one of the pens that he used to sign this bill and it is a daily reminder to me of the various students that we help in their college selection journeys.

Many of you worked this summer to help with another enlightening Camp College, NACAC’s Guiding the Way to Inclusion and most recently at our record attendance National College Fair. I am in awe that whenever I have asked for help, you readily say “yes.” We are indeed a strong and talented organization.

I have many people to thank for making my first few months in office so awesome. Below I am listing the chairs that have worked extremely hard to plan and organize our most recent events in order to give them credit for jobs well done. I am excited for what is to come… thank you!!
