During lunch, MMI staff will lead discussions with participants in “like” DiSC groups covering topics such as what group you identify with? What might your colleagues and supervisor’s profiles look like? How do you work successfully with those that are different than you? What are the learning opportunities gained from working with those like or different than yourself?

Leadership and Communication Strategies

Presenter: Harold Dahlstrand, Executive in Residence – Center for Business & Economics at Elmhurst College
Description: Mr. Dahlstrand will engage participants in a discussion regarding what it means to be a leader and how that differs from being a manager. This session will also incorporate case studies where participants can explore various issues in leadership and management they may encounter within their offices and provide strategies with how to navigate these situations.

Panelists: Ryan Cockerill, Lewis University; Timmi Turley, University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign; Carlene Klaas, De Paul University
Description: This is your opportunity to spend time with a panel of Deans and Directors from various institutions and ask them what you want to know about what qualities they look for in developing middle managers, how you can advance your career, and how can you ensure that you are squeezing the most out of your current role. These individuals will also share best practices for middle managers, help you understand why you may not be getting promoted, and share tips for how to manage up to ensure your personal and professional development is maximized.

Enrollment Management -  What is it?
Moderator: Nate Bargar, Illinois State University
Presenter: Tony Bankston, Illinois Wesleyan University
Description: Enrollment Management. In the world of college admissions you hear about it every day.  As a middle manager or a potential middle manager you may have a pretty good idea what it all means, but you’ve always wanted to know more.  Where did enrollment management start?  Why did it start?  What do I need to know about it?  Am I an enrollment manager?  What role do I play in the process?  This session will answer these questions and more to give you a better understanding of enrollment management and what it is that enrollment managers do.

Taking the Next Step
Moderator: Anne Kremer, Northwestern University
Presenter: Lori Greene, Loyola University Chicago; Rob Springall, Bucknell University
Description: Participants will develop a Next Step Plan that includes short-term and long-term goals. Discussions will be centered around the following questions:
1. What is each participant’s next step? Is it internal or external?
2. What skills/experiences are needed to get you to the next step?
3. What can you expect when you get there? Expectations associated with role?
4. How will your success in this new role be measured?
5. How does this specific next step fall into the plan for your long-term goals in the profession?

Description: During this panel, we will discuss why we as admission professionals do what we do and what keeps us going when things get challenging. There will also be time for reflection from participants on what they have learned thus far and how they can make their mark (positively) within their office?

“Choose Your Track” Session

TRACK A:  Budgeting (for current managers)
Presenter: Sacha Theime, DePaul University; Michele Brown, Oakton Community College
Description: This session is designed to provide participants with the nuts and bolts of budget preparation to support their projects and/or programs. Even if you do not currently manage a budget it is important to demonstrate you possess the knowledge and skills necessary of a fiscally responsible manager. Budgeting basics will be addressed and examples and tools will be showcased during this session to give participants an idea of how they can exercise these skills in their current role. As a middle manager you never know when you may be called upon to fulfill a new role and responsibility, but you do want to make sure you have demonstrated the ability to assume the responsibilities when they become available.
