Camp College 2012

July 9-11, 2012
Bradley University
Through the support of the Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling (IACAC), Camp College is a free opportunity for rising seniors to learn about aspects of the college search and application process from college and high school counselors. Students will be able to have the experience of living on a college campus, while attending sessions on the college application process. Camp College will take place at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. Students will be provided food and lodging free of cost.
Sessions will cover the following topics:
- How do I search for colleges that I’ve never heard of?
- How do I choose which colleges to apply to?
- What do colleges and universities look for in prospective students?
- What is the process for applying to schools?
- How do I pay for college and why might I be able to afford a more expensive school?
- How do I present myself in an essay or an interview?
- How do I make the transition from high school senior to college freshman – successfully?
Campers will be paired with a counselor-mentor who they retain for the school year and follow-up activities will be coordinated throughout the year. In the fall, students can expect an invitation to attend a campers-only program during the fall of senior year. A second opportunity to reconnect with campers, mentors and college representatives will take place in the spring of senior year. This program will allow campers to work through the financial aid process and learn about scholarships, along with transitioning from a high school student to a successful college student.
When will it take place?
Students are expected to arrive by 11:00 am on Monday July 9, 2012 and will depart after lunch on Wednesday, July 11, 2012.
What does it cost?
Students will pay a $20 deposit that will be refunded at the program’s conclusion. Because of the generous support of IACAC and other sponsors, the camp can be offered with no cost to the students.
How will students get to Bradley for the camp?
If possible, students should provide their own transportation to Camp College. Depending on the location of selected students as well as their transportation needs, Camp College may provide buses to pick up students in centralized locations and then bring them back to those locations on the final day of the program. Please indicate on the application the student’s transportation options. If a student has a unique transportation issue, please indicate that on the application.
Who should apply?
This program is designed for students from non-traditional backgrounds who would benefit from exposure to this information. The selection committee will give additional consideration to students from rural areas, first-generation college students, and students from schools with a low percentage of college-bound students. Students should have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
What is the application process?
1. The process starts with an application from the student with the nomination filled out by an adult familiar with the student. The form can be emailed, mailed, or faxed to Anabel Duarte, Ashford University. Three students per school are permitted to apply. The committee would like to have a broad range of students from different backgrounds, schools, and areas of the state. The deadline for applications is Friday, April 13, 2012.
2. The committee will select approximately 40 students to participate in the program. Students will be notified of their selection by Friday, May 25, 2012.
3. Selected students will have their parents or guardians sign a permission form and send in a $20 deposit by Friday, June 1, 2012. (The $20 will be refunded upon completion of the program.)
